Junior Quadrangular Results

JUNIOR QUADRANGULAR:  AUCKLAND / BAY OF PLENTY / WAIKATO / NORTHLAND

Hosted by Waikato this year, and held at the Hamilton Squash and Tennis Club, the Junior Quadrangular saw the best juniors in each age group division competing against their age group peers from the other three regions. Usually each region enters two boys and two girls in each of the Under 11, Under 13, Under 15, Under 17 and Under 19 age groups, but this year there was no Under 11 girls competition. So our team was made up of 18 of the best Bay of Plenty juniors who, this year were between 9-17 years of age. Many of the kids had played the Quadrangular tournaments previously and were well experienced in the type of pressure that comes with representing your district. But it was great to see about six new players representing the Bay at this year’s event too, each of whom stepped up to the mark and gave it their best against some pretty tough competition. It was great to witness all of these young players really digging deep and bringing their best on the squash court. Some players developed a clear understanding that every point really does counts in these competitions, where even matches means a count back on games and points. There were a few anxious moments throughout the weekend where we were counting games and points. 

While Auckland was clearly a rank above the other districts this year, the competition between the other three districts was much tighter. At the end of the tournament, the tally of boys and girls games combined placed the Bay team 3rd behind Auckland and Northland. Only one game separated each of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th placings—such was the closeness of the competition between Northland, Bay of Plenty and Waikato. 

We were proud of how our players managed themselves on and off the court and the way that they came together as a team. Thanks to Robbie, Graeme, and Mike for their coaching support, and to the parents who supported all of the players throughout the tournament.
